84 people involved in total

Describe the purpose of the program/activity/event:

To provide physical activity, social opportunity, while enjoying an activity that is nostalgic for many of them. Many of our seniors grew up ice curling. While a few of them are still able to do so, many are not, due to limited mobility, balance, or other barriers. Our goal was to break these barriers so they could continue to enjoy their familiar activities.

Briefly describe what you think made your activity/program/event special? Why do you think it was successful?

Our floor curling group has formed their own community which gives them ownership over this event. With this ownership comes a feeling of importance and responsibility, giving them a feeling of purpose. They invite other seniors to join them bringing in new members and turn it into a social event serving coffee and refreshments. It has become their event, which they have made successful.

How inviting or appealing was this activity for the older adults involved?

Seniors are always more willing to participate when other seniors are inviting or encouraging them to come. This gives them comfort that the activity is designed for their needs and abilities.

How easy was it (for the older adults) to participate?

With sticks to use to push the rocks, mobility barriers were eliminated. The rest of the event is about socializing and having fun.

How likely will the older adults who were involved participate again in the future?

We have a dedicated group of seniors who are wanting to continue again after Christmas, with the possibility of hosting a bonspiel.

What advice would you give other groups who may be considering the planning and facilitation of a similar opportunity for older adults?

Whenever possible empower the seniors by involving them with decision making, regarding the event, to give them the confidence to participate.

What key learning (pearls of wisdom) would you like to share about your experience in "connecting with respect" and creating opportunities for social engagement of older adults in Manitoba?

Seniors are our "pearls of wisdom." To engage them to share with others through activities that provide social opportunities is priceless.
