Connect with Respect - Clandeboye Seniors Lunch Program

Seniors Lunch Program
Clandeboye Community Club
First Monday of the month, September-May
62 older adult participants (aged 55 years or older)
68 people involved in total

Describe the purpose of the program/activity/event:

To provide a hot, complete, homemade meal in a social setting. Provide a safe environment for seniors to interact.

Briefly describe what you think made your program/activity/event special? Why do you think it was successful?

Because it allows social interaction between area seniors. Some seniors who now live in a seniors' complex can reconnect with former neighbours and friends. We also do a book exchange and special events and entertainment. We also have door prizes and once a year a rainbow auction. We also put on a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and Christmas games and entertainment.

How inviting or appealing was this activity for the older adults involved?

Very - some members show up as much as 1 hour before the event. Also, we have a waiting list of people wanting to attend.

How easy was it (for the older adults) to participate?

Very - once you get on the phone out list you get a phone call one week prior to the event to remind you.

How likely will the older adults who were involved participate again in the future?

Very - we find that some members mark their calendars so they don't make any appointments, etc. that would conflict with their attending.

What advice would you give other groups who may be considering the planning and facilitation of a similar opportunity for older adults?

Get a good group of volunteers to help implement the program and be prepared to put in the hours to make it a successful event.

What key learning (pearls of wisdom) would you like to share about your experience "connecting with respect" and creating opportunities for social engagement of older adults in Manitoba?

Talk to the people attending and find out what they expect of the event and tailor the event to include things they find interesting and enjoyable.
