Connect with Respect - Mitchell Senior Jam Session

Senior Jam Session
Mitchell Senior Centre
Every Monday, Sept-June
16+ older adult participants (aged 55 years or older)
20+ people involved in total

Describe the purpose of the program/activity/event:

We want seniors to get out more and participate in singing and socialization to lead a more productive life. We would like to put on a healthy evening dinner in October for seniors week.

Briefly describe what you think made your program/activity/event special? Why do you think it was successful?

We sang old country and gospel music which older people enjoy. The number of musicians coming out is increasing. Two senior musicians are taking guitar lessons.

How inviting or appealing was this activity for the older adults involved?

They love it.

How easy was it (for the older adults) to participate?

Very easy. They just needed to prepare a few songs and encourage others to come as participants or audience.

How likely will the older adults who were involved participate again in the future?

Very likely. The number is increasing every week.

What advice would you give other groups who may be considering the planning and facilitation of a similar opportunity for older adults?

Be encouraging and tell everyone.

What key learning (pearls of wisdom) would you like to share about your experience in "connecting with respect" and creating opportunities for social engagement of older adults in Manitoba?

It's a great way to meet and become friends with seniors who otherwise would remain at home. We continue to learn to get along and respect other people's opinions.
